The GoPro HERO14 and the DJI Osmo Action 6 are the two most talked about action cameras for adventure and underwater use. As of mid 2026 they sit in very different places. The Osmo Action 6 has launched and is on sale across most of the world, while the HERO14 is still delayed with no confirmed release date. This guide compares where each camera stands, what the DJI actually delivers now that it has shipped, what the HERO14 leaks point to, and which makes more sense if you film below the surface.
Where each camera stands in 2026
DJI launched the Osmo Action 6 globally on 18 November 2025. GoPro, by contrast, still has not released the HERO14. Instead of a new HERO Black flagship in 2025, GoPro released the Lit HERO and the Max 2, then in 2026 introduced its MISSION 1 cinema camera line. The HERO13 Black remains the current HERO flagship while everyone waits on the HERO14.
The most recent HERO14 leak, from Ryan Mitchell in July 2026, shows the camera’s menu confirming 8K at 30fps and points to GoPro’s new GP3 processor. There is still no official launch date. For the full picture, see our GoPro HERO14 rumours, features and release date guide.
DJI Osmo Action 6: what actually shipped
Because the Action 6 is out, we now know its real specification rather than the earlier rumours. Some of those rumours, including talk of a 1 inch sensor and 8K video, did not turn out to be accurate.
- 1/1.1 inch square sensor with 2.4 micron fused pixels
- Variable aperture from f/2.0 to f/4.0, an industry first for an action camera
- 4K video at up to 120fps, plus up to 32x slow motion at 1080p
- SuperNight mode for cleaner low light footage, including 4K at 60fps
- 13.5 stops of dynamic range and 10 bit D-Log M colour
- RockSteady 3.0 stabilisation with 360 degree HorizonSteady
- Waterproof to 20m without a housing and 60m with one, IP68 rated
- Around 4 hours of battery life, with 80 percent charge in 22 minutes
- 50GB of internal storage and dual wireless microphone support
Pricing at launch was £329 for the standard bundle and £419 for the Adventure Combo in the UK, with similar pricing across Europe. The important catch is availability. DJI did not sell the Action 6 through official US channels at launch and has given no timeline for when that might change, so US buyers are still waiting. Our DJI Osmo Action 6 guide covers the full specification and availability in more detail.
GoPro HERO14: what the leaks point to
The HERO14 is not out, so everything here is based on leaks and GoPro’s current direction rather than confirmed specs.
- GoPro’s new GP3 processor, promising better image quality, low light capture, runtime and thermal performance
- 8K at 30fps, shown in the leaked on screen menu
- A familiar HERO style body that stays easy to mount and protect
- Improvements aimed at low light, battery life and connectivity rather than headline resolution alone
What the HERO14 will cost, and when it will actually arrive, remains unconfirmed.

Which is better for underwater use
For underwater filming the honest answer today is that the DJI Osmo Action 6 is the one you can actually buy, and its variable aperture, strong low light performance and 20m waterproof depth make it a capable underwater camera in its own right. If you are outside the US and want a camera now, it is a strong choice. GoPro users are left waiting for the HERO14 or sticking with the HERO13 Black.
There is one limit that applies to both, and to every action camera. WiFi and Bluetooth do not travel through water, so neither the Osmo Action 6 nor the HERO14 can stream a live view once the camera is submerged. If seeing your footage in real time below the surface matters, that is where a Seavu system comes in, showing a live feed on your phone or tablet while the camera is underwater.
Bottom line
As of mid 2026 this is no longer a like for like rumour comparison. The DJI Osmo Action 6 has shipped and set a high bar, especially for low light and underwater depth, though US availability remains a real obstacle. The GoPro HERO14 is still coming, and the latest leaks suggest it will be a meaningful upgrade when it lands, but there is no date yet. If you need a camera now, the Action 6 is the practical pick where it is sold. If you are set on GoPro, it is a waiting game, and either way a Seavu system is what lets you see your footage live underwater.
