For any angler, knowing where the fish are biting is half the battle. Over the years, technologies have evolved to aid in locating the best fishing spots. An underwater camera, an often overlooked tool, can offer anglers a real-time and up-close view of the aquatic world, providing several advantages in finding the perfect fishing grounds. Let’s explore how.

See Beneath the Surface

The primary advantage of using an underwater camera is its ability to provide a clear picture of what’s happening beneath the water’s surface. Unlike fish finders that interpret sonar data into a graph or an image, underwater cameras provide direct visual feedback. This allows you to see fish species, their size, and behaviour, as well as underwater structures and the bottom composition.

Locate Fish and Identify Species

One of the significant benefits of an underwater camera is the ability to locate fish and identify species directly. This can be especially advantageous when you’re targeting a specific species, as it helps eliminate the guesswork involved with traditional fish finders. By identifying the species directly, you can adjust your bait and fishing techniques accordingly to maximize your catch.

Observe Fish Behaviour

Underwater cameras can provide unparalleled insights into fish behaviour. You can observe how fish respond to different types of bait and lure presentations, providing valuable knowledge that can make you a more successful angler. Understanding fish behaviour can also help you determine the best times to fish, giving you an edge in planning your fishing trips.

Identify Underwater Structures and Bottom Composition

Fish often congregate near underwater structures such as submerged trees, reefs, and drop-offs. Underwater cameras can help you identify these structures with precision, revealing potential hotspots for fish. In addition, understanding the bottom composition—whether it’s rocky, sandy, or muddy—can help you choose the right bait and gear.

Educational and Fun

Lastly, using an underwater camera adds an element of fun and education to your fishing trips. It’s fascinating to explore underwater environments and see aquatic life in their natural habitats. For those fishing with children, an underwater camera can be an educational tool, sparking interest in marine biology and the environment.

Choosing the Right Underwater Camera

When choosing an underwater camera for fishing, it’s essential to consider factors such as depth rating, image quality, battery life, and ease of use. Cameras like the DJI Action 3 or the GoPro Hero11 Black offer excellent underwater performance, capturing clear, high-quality footage even in low-light conditions. Remember to also look for cameras with durable construction to withstand harsh aquatic environments.

Leverage the Power of Seavu

The Seavu Fishing Camera System is designed to enhance your action camera’s versatility across a variety of fishing activities including drifting, trolling, extension pole use or seafloor filming. It boasts an innovative, award-winning design that lets you livestream footage from your action camera directly to your phone. This enhancement gives you a real-time view of what’s happening beneath the waves, making your fishing experience even more interactive and productive.

Underwater cameras are an invaluable asset in the quest for rich fishing grounds. By revealing what lies beneath the water’s surface, they offer a significant advantage, allowing you to pinpoint fish species, understand their behaviours, and identify underwater structures with precision. It’s about more than just increasing your catch; it’s about gaining a deeper understanding of the underwater world, enhancing your skills, and becoming a more informed and successful angler.
The integration of underwater cameras with innovative technology such as the Seavu Fishing Camera System further enriches this experience, adapting your action camera for diverse fishing applications and even allowing you to livestream footage to your phone.

A fishing camera lets you see exactly what is happening below the surface in real time.

A fishing camera gives you a direct view of what is happening below the surface, allowing you to see fish behaviour, bait movement, and underwater structure in real time. Instead of guessing what is happening below, you can see it clearly and respond instantly while you fish.

Whether you are fishing from a boat, kayak, jetty, or shoreline, having a live underwater view helps you make better decisions and get more out of every session.

There are several types of fishing cameras available, from traditional drop cameras to modern systems that stream live footage to your phone, tablet, monitor, or compatible chartplotter. Choosing the right setup depends on how and where you fish, and the level of control and flexibility you need.

If you are looking for a complete live viewing setup, you can explore the options below.

What is a fishing camera?

A fishing camera is a camera system used to view underwater activity while fishing. It usually includes a camera placed below the surface and a viewing device above the water.

Traditional fishing cameras often use a cable connected to a dedicated screen. Newer systems use action cameras and transmit live underwater footage to devices such as phones, tablets, or external displays.

Why wireless fishing cameras struggle underwater

Many anglers look for wireless fishing cameras, but WiFi and Bluetooth signals do not travel effectively through water. Once submerged, the signal becomes unreliable or drops out completely.

Seavu systems solve this by using a cable-based connection to bring the signal back above the surface, where it can then be viewed on your device. Learn more about why action camera WiFi fails underwater.

What Is the Best Fishing Trolling Camera and How to See Your Lure Spread in Real Time

When you’re trolling offshore for marlin, tuna, sailfish or other pelagic species, most of the action happens out of sight.

You can watch the rods, read the sounder and fine tune your spread from experience. However, you still cannot see how your lures are swimming, how fish are reacting, or what is happening behind the boat in real time. This is where a fishing camera system becomes incredibly valuable for understanding what’s really happening below the surface.

Over the years, anglers have used everything from line mounted cameras to GoPro housings like TrollPro to capture that underwater view. These setups can produce incredible footage. However, they all share the same limitation, you only see the result after the moment has passed.

A modern tow cam for fishing changes that.

If you want to see how your lures are actually performing and how fish are reacting in real time, the right system makes all the difference.

Explore Seavu Fishing Camera Systems

What Is a Tow Cam for Fishing?

A tow cam for fishing is an underwater camera system designed to be towed behind a boat while trolling. It allows anglers to observe lure performance, fish behaviour and underwater conditions either through recorded footage or live viewing.

For offshore trolling, this means you can see:

Most tow cams fall into three categories:

This difference is what defines how useful the system actually is.

See the full fishing camera guide

A tow cam is just one way to use a fishing camera setup. If you want a complete overview of how these systems work, including different setups, live viewing options, and how to choose the right approach, you can explore our full fishing camera guide.

Fishing Without vs With a Tow Cam

Without a tow cam

With a real time tow cam

This is where tow cams move from a filming tool to a fishing tool.

Without real time viewing, you are always reacting after the moment has passed. This limits your ability to adjust and improve your spread while trolling.

Upgrade to Real Time Underwater Viewing

If your goal is to actually see what’s happening while trolling, the best setup is the Seavu Explorer Adventure Kit, available in 17m or 27m.

This setup gives you a stable, real time underwater view of your lure spread while you are still fishing.

Tow Cam Systems for Trolling: What’s Available?

The tow cam category is often misunderstood because very different systems are grouped together.

Here’s how they compare in real offshore use.

System typeExamplesBest forMain limitation

Trolling housingsTrollProRecording spread and dredgesRecord only
Dedicated live systemsTowCamHDLive trolling viewFixed setup

Line Mounted Trolling Cameras

line mounted tow cam for fishing attached to lure during trolling

These cameras attach directly to your fishing line and travel with the lure.

They are useful for capturing strike footage. However, they only show a narrow view and do not provide feedback across your full spread.

TrollPro Style Camera Housings

TrollPro tow cam housing with GoPro used for trolling camera setup

TrollPro camera housings helped bring underwater trolling footage into mainstream offshore fishing.

By placing a GoPro inside a hydrodynamic housing, anglers could tow a camera behind the boat and record their lure spread, dredges and fish behaviour.

These systems are still used today. However, they are record only. You retrieve the camera, then review the footage. That means you cannot adjust your spread while the fish are actually there.

Dedicated Live View Tow Systems

dedicated tow cam system used for live underwater trolling footage

Systems like TowCamHD include live underwater viewing into trolling setups.

They are designed for offshore use and allow anglers to see underwater activity while fishing. However, most of these systems rely on built-in cameras with limited resolution, and because the camera cannot be upgraded, they tend to become outdated as technology advances. They also offer less flexibility in terms of camera choice and setup.

BuiltBuilt In Cameras vs Action Camera Systems

Many tow cam systems include a built in camera.

While convenient, these systems come with a number of limitations:

They also lock you into a single system. As camera technology continues to improve each year, fixed camera setups can quickly fall behind.

In contrast, systems like Seavu use GoPro and DJI Action cameras.

This means you can:

Instead of replacing your entire setup, you can simply upgrade your camera.

Your tow cam stays current, not outdated.

Real Time Tow Cam Systems: The Game Changer

Seavu Explorer underwater housing with DJI Osmo Action camera

This is where Seavu stands apart.

The Explorer Adventure Kit is a real time underwater viewing system built around the cameras anglers already trust.

It is also part of Seavu’s wider range of fishing camera systems, designed for real time underwater viewing in offshore fishing conditions.

Instead of guessing what is happening behind the boat, you can see it live.

You can watch:

This is real time feedback, not footage you review later.

Explorer vs Explorer+: Choosing Your Setup

Seavu offers two ways to view your footage.

Explorer: Mobile Viewing

The Explorer version uses WiFi to connect to your action camera app on your phone or tablet.

Explorer+: HDMI to Chartplotter or Screen

The Explorer+ Adventure Kit uses a fibre optic cable system to deliver a direct HDMI video feed to chartplotters, boat displays and monitors.

The Explorer+ system is ideal for serious offshore setups, professional filming and anglers who want the underwater feed displayed on a dedicated screen.

Built for Trolling: The Explorer Troll Fin System

tow cam for fishing with troll fin stabilising underwater camera while trolling

The Explorer Troll Fin is what makes this a true trolling camera system and a key part of Seavu’s fishing camera systems designed for real world offshore use.

Developed over years of real world testing, it solves the core challenges of towing a camera offshore, including stability, depth control and tracking.

It:

Without these features working together, most tow cams struggle to stay stable or positioned correctly in real conditions.

The combination of hydrodynamic design, integrated weight and visual attraction helps keep the camera in the strike zone while increasing the chances of capturing fish behaviour on camera.

Fishing Line Integration with Release Clips

fishing line release clips attached to tow cam system for trolling lure setup

The Explorer system includes release clips to connect your fishing line.

You can:

This turns the system into a functional part of your spread.

Built for Trolling and Much More

While the Explorer Adventure Kit is one of the most effective tow cam setups available, it is not limited to trolling.

The system is fully adaptable.

With the same kit, you can also use it for:

This means you are not buying a single purpose tow cam. You are investing in a system that adapts to how you fish.

Where to Position a Tow Cam in Your Spread

For best results:

Why WiFi Cameras Don’t Work Underwater

Water blocks WiFi and Bluetooth signals almost instantly.

This is why most action cameras cannot stream live underwater. They can record, but they cannot provide a reliable live feed while submerged.

How Seavu Solves This

Seavu uses a cable based transmission system instead of relying on underwater WiFi.

This provides:

Who Should Use a Tow Cam?

Final Thoughts

A tow cam used to be about capturing footage.

Now, it is about understanding what is happening behind the boat in real time.

With systems like the Seavu Explorer Adventure Kit, it also becomes a flexible underwater viewing platform that adapts to how you fish.

And as shown by anglers like Al McGlashan, it is already being used in real offshore conditions to refine techniques and capture what was previously invisible.

Instead of guessing, you are reacting. Instead of hoping, you are learning. Over time, that leads to better results offshore.

Ready to See What’s Happening Below?

A tow cam is no longer just about capturing footage. It’s about understanding fish behaviour, improving your spread, and making better decisions in real time.

If you’re serious about offshore fishing, a real time system will change the way you fish.
